The al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, shared on September 11 video footage showing a recent deadly attack from the northern Gaza Strip as the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) escalated its strikes on the Palestinian enclave killing dozens.
The attack took place in the area of Jabalia three days earlier. The IDF acknowledged that the tank was destroyed and all four crewmen were killed. The footage released by Hamas shows two of the group’s fighters planting an explosive device on top of the tank, a Merkava Mk.4M, which burned from the inside out after the blast.
Separately, the IDF expanded its operations in Gaza on September 11. Israeli strikes were said to kill 53 Palestinians across Gaza, including women and children.
According to the Hamas-run health ministry, 39 people were killed in Gaza City and other areas in the northern part of the Strip, and an additional 14 in the enclave’s central and southern parts. At least 29 of those killed were reportedly searching for food when they were hit. It’s worth noting that the Palestinian death toll from the Israel war is already nearing 45,000.
Al-Jazeera reported that Israeli strikes destroyed 18 residential buildings in Gaza City since this morning, including 12 in the Shati refugee camp in the west of the city.
In addition to the strikes, the IDF dropped leaflets over the relatively unscathed Al-Naser area of Gaza City, warning that troops would soon take control of the western neighborhood. The assault would be a part of a large-scale offensive in the city that the military has been preparing for weeks.
The IDF announced on September 11 that it has expanded its operations on the outskirts of Gaza City’s Sheikh Radwan neighborhood and the Kafr Jabalia area in recent days.
In a statement, the military said that the 162nd Division’s forces located and destroyed dozens of Hamas sites, including booby traps, weapon depots, and two tunnels spanning hundreds of meters.
It added that dozens of “terror operatives” were killed by the forces and in strikes, including a platoon commander in Hamas’s Sheikh Radwan Battalion and the commander of a Nukhba Force cell who invaded Israel during the October 7 attack of 2023.
Five divisions, made up of tens of thousands of troops, will reportedly participate in the Gaza City offensive. Among those is the 36th Division, which the IDF said on September 11 had been withdrawn from the city of Khan Younis in southern Gaza.
Also on September 11, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a high-level meeting to discuss the possible “voluntary emigration” of Palestinians from Gaza, according to Hebrew media, which didn’t reveal much details on the meeting.
All recent developments indicate that Israel is determined to go on with its large-scale offensive in Gaza City. Hamas has shown openness for a new ceasefire-hostage agreement, despite the recent attack on its leadership in Qatar, which was largely a failure. However, this will not likely sway Netanyahu away from his military plans.
The offensive will likely destroy much of what is left in the city. Palestinian forcibly displaced will have no place to return to. In the end, this is what Israel is likely looking for.
