Hezbollah has denied that a fighter killed by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) on January 9 was the commander of its drone unit or air force.
The fighter in question, Ali Hussein Burji, was one of four that Hezbollah acknowledged their death on that day. He was killed in an Israeli drone strike that targeted a vehicle on the town of Khirbet Selm in southern Lebanon.
“The commander [of the drone unit] was never subjected to any assassination attempt as the enemy claimed,” Hezbollah said in a statement.
Earlier, IDF Spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari alleged that Burji was responsible for dozens of drone attacks on northern Israel.
“In the north today, we eliminated the commander of Hezbollah’s aerial forces in southern Lebanon,” Hagari said during a press briefing.
Burji carried out “dozens of operations using drones against Israel,” the spokesman noted, including an attack that targeted the IDF’s Northern Command headquarters on the same day. Minor damage was caused after two suicide drones hit the base in the northern Israeli city of Safed. Video footage of the strike that killed Burji were released by the IDF.
Hezbollah said that the attack on the IDF’s headquarters was carried out in response to the assassination of Wissam al-Tawil, a senior commander of the group’s elite Redwan Force, and Saleh al-Arouri, deputy leader of the Palestinian Hamas Movement.
Al-Arouri was killed along with six other members of Hamas, including two commanders of the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, in an airstrike that targeted the southern Beirut suburb of Dahiyeh, a stronghold of Hezbollah, on January 2. Al-Tawil was killed in a drone strike that targeted Khirbet Selm on January 8. Israel did not claim responsibility for either assassination.
Since October 8, Hezbollah and its allies have launched hundreds of cross-border attacks from southern Lebanon in support of Hamas and other Palestinian armed factions amid the IDF’s invasion of the Gaza Strip, which followed the October 7 surprise attack on Israel.
So far, the border clashes have resulted in four civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the deaths of nine IDF soldiers. On the Lebanese side, more than 180 have been killed. The toll includes 149 Hezbollah fighters, 14 of whom were killed in Syria, 25 Palestinians, a Lebanese soldier, and at least 21 civilians.
