The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced on November 16 that another soldier was killed in southern Lebanon a day earlier.
The slain soldier was named as Sergeant Ori Nisanovich, 21, of the Golani Brigade’s 13th Battalion, from the city of Jerusalem.
According to an initial IDF probe, Nisanovich was killed during an exchange of fire with a Hezbollah fighter in a building in a southern Lebanon town. His death brought the IDF’s toll in the ground operation against Hezbollah along the border and in southern Lebanon to 44.
Hezbollah announced 26 attacks on November 16, including a strike with heavy artillery rockets and precision-guided missiles on several military bases near the northern Israeli city of Haifa. The strike caused heavy damage and five people were reportedly hurt while running for shelter.
In addition, Lebanese media reported that Hezbollah repelled multiple attacks by the IDF, mainly in the directions of the towns of Chama and al-Khiam.
The clashes on the Lebanese-Israeli border first broke out after the start of the war in the Gaza Strip, with Hezbollah launching attacks in support of the Palestinian enclave. Israel escalated its attacks on Lebanon starting from September 17 and on September 27 it assassinated the Secretary-General of Hezbollah, Hassan Nassrallah.
The IDF escalated further on September 30 by launching a limited ground operation against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
All in all, the confrontation has so far resulted in 43 civilian deaths in Israel and the occupied Syrian Golan Heights as well as the deaths of at least 71 soldiers and security officers. On the Lebanese side, more than 3,400 people have been killed, including more than 500 members of Hezbollah.
