Hezbollah launched on September 22 several barrages of rockets deep into northern Israel, targeting an air base and defense factories.
In three separate statements, Hezbollah said that it fired two barrages of rockets at Ramat David Air Base and another at a military-industrial complex of the Rafael Advanced Defense Systems in the Zevulun area. Both targets are located just under 50 kilometers from the border of Lebanon.
The attacks in Ramat David Air Base were carried out in response to recent Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon, and the attack on Rafael’s complex was carried out in response to the September 17 and 18 sabotage attack that targeted communication devices across Lebanon, Hezbollah added.
It also noted in the statements that the attacks were also carried out “in support of the steadfast Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and to support their valiant and honorable resistance.”
The group used heavy rockets dubbed “Fadi-1” and “Fadi-2” in the attacks. These rockets are thought to be Syrian-made M302 and Iranian-made Fajr-5 unguided rockets.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) carried out dozens of strikes against 110 targets of Hezbollah, including rocket launchers, in southern Lebanon late on September 21. Still, it failed to prevent the group from launching its deepest strike into Israel since the outbreak of the clashes.
Hezbollah managed to launch at least 109 heavy rockets overnight, according to the IDF, which claimed that most of the rockets were intercepted.
Hebrew media reported a fire near Ramat David Air Base and material losses close to the port city of Haifa, where Zevulun is located. At least four people were wounded, one in the attacks on the air base and three others in the attack on Rafael’s complex.
In response to the rocket attacks, the IDF launched another wave of strikes against southern Lebanon, targeting rocket launchers of Hezbollah and buildings allegedly used by the group. At least one Hezbollah fighter was killed as a result of the strikes.
The IDF vowed in a statement to ramp up its strikes against Lebanon to “dismantle and degrade” the capabilities of Hezbollah.
The clashes on the Lebanese-Israeli border first broke out after the start of the Israeli war on Gaza last October, with Hezbollah and its allies launching nearly-daily against the IDF in support of the Strip.
Over the past week, the clashes on the border escalated as a result of a series of Israeli sabotage attacks and targeted strikes that claimed the lives of more than 70 people in Lebanon, including senior military commanders of Hezbollah. The group vowed retaliation.
So far, the clashes have resulted in 26 civilian deaths in Israel and the occupied Syrian Golan Heights as well as the deaths of at least 22 soldiers and security officers. On the Lebanese side, more than 900 people have been killed, including 499 fighters of Hezbollah and over 150 civilians.
