Hezbollah launched on January 31 another wave of attacks against the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) from its heartland, southern Lebanon.
In three separate statements, Hezbollah said its fighters targeted a building occupied by Israeli soldiers in the settlement of Metulla and attacked two other gatherings of troops on al-Tahihat Hill and in the Mitat barracks using rockets and other “suitable weapons”.
The group announced in two other statements that it had targeted an Israeli Merkava main battle tank at the Bayad Blida military site and destroyed surveillance equipment of the IDF at the Hanita military site, also using “suitable weapons”.
The attacks were carried out “to support the steadfast Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and in support of their brave and honorable resistance,” Hezbollah noted its statements.
In response to the attacks, IDF announced that it carried out a series of strikes on Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon.
Fighter jets hit a compound with several buildings belonging to the group in the town of Rchaf, the IDF said in a statement, adding that it also carried out artillery shelling against areas near the towns of Alma al-Shaab and Aitaroun. Lebanese media didn’t report any casualties.
The clashes on the Lebanese-Israeli border first broke out after the start of the war in Gaza, with Hezbollah and its allies, including Palestinian armed factions, carrying out attacks in support of the Strip.
So far, the border clashes have resulted in six civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the deaths of nine IDF soldiers. On the Lebanese side, more than 200 have been killed. The toll includes 165 Hezbollah fighters, 14 of whom were killed in Syria, 28 Palestinians, a Lebanese soldier, and at least 24 civilians.
