Hezbollah attacked on December 14 three positions of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) from its heartland, southern Lebanon.
In separate statements, the group said that its fighters targeted Israeli gatherings of troops and equipment in the Shumira military site, Yiftah barracks and Honen Castle with “suitable weapons. The attacks were carried out “to support the steadfast Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and in support of their brave and honorable resistance,” it noted.
The IDF responded to the attacks with a series of air and artillery strikes that hit targets of Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, including a cell armed with an anti-tank guided missile launcher.
Lebanese media reported heavy Israeli strikes and footage posted to social media showed large plumes of smoke rising over the towns of Aitaroun and adjacent Maroun al-Ras. A fighter from Hezbollah was killed. However, there were no civilian casualties.
Clashes on the Lebanese-Israeli border first broke out last October when Hezbollah and its allies, including the Palestinian Hamas Movement and Islamic Jihad, began launching attacks against the Israel from southern Lebanon in support of Gaza.
As of December 14, the clashes on the Lebanese front have claimed the lives of 144 people, including six IDF soldiers, 102 fighters of Hezbollah, 13 fighters from Hamas and Islamic Jihad, a soldier from the Lebanese Armed Forces and at least 14 Lebanese civilians.
