The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) admitted on October 25 that five more reservists were killed and 19 others were wounded by Lebanon’s Hezbollah a day earlier
The troops were all serving with the 8th Armored Brigade’s 89th Battalion. One of them was the deputy battalion commander.
According to an initial IDF probe, the troops were hit by a rocket barrage launched by Hezbollah at a building in a southern Lebanese village, while they were accepting a logistics supply. One of the rockets landed near the building where the troops were standing. Members of the logistics convoy were also wounded.
Among the 19 troops wounded in the rocket attack, four were listed in serious condition, the IDF said, noting that the wounded troops, along with another reservist who was seriously wounded during fighting in southern Lebanon this morning, were taken to hospitals for treatment.
The latest deaths brought the number of Israeli troops killed by Hezbollah in less than 48 hours to ten. On October 23, four reservists serving with the Carmeli Brigade’s 222nd Battalion were killed. And on October 24, a soldier from the IDF’s dedicated canine special force, known as the Oketz Unit, was killed.
The toll could rise in the upcoming few hours as Hebrew media reported additional “security incidents” in southern Lebanon on October 25.
The clashes on the Lebanese-Israeli border first broke out after the start of the war in the Gaza Strip, with Hezbollah launching attacks in support of the Palestinian enclave. Israel escalated its attacks on Lebanon starting from September 17 and on September 27 it assassinated the Secretary-General of Hezbollah, Hassan Nassrallah.
The IDF announced the launch of a limited ground operation in southern Lebanon on September 30. Since then, Israeli troops have not yet made any real gains and Hezbollah rocket attacks have been increasing.
The confrontation has so far resulted in 29 civilian deaths in Israel and the occupied Syrian Golan Heights as well as the deaths of at least 55 soldiers and security officers. On the Lebanese side, more than 2,574 people have been killed, including more than 500 members of Hezbollah.
