Hezbollah on April 7 shared for the first time ever video footage showing its fighters launching a Scud-type tactical ballistic missile at northern Israel.
The group said that the attack, which took place on March 31, targeted “military infrastructure, in the area of Krayot near the port city of Haifa. Sirens sounded in northern Israel multiple times on that day, with Hebrew media reporting dozens of launches from Lebanon and interceptions.
There were also rumors on social networks of Hezbollah firing a Scud-type missile around the same time the attack took place, with claims that it was intercepted.
It was not clear from the footage shared by Hezbollah if the liquid-fueled missile was fired from a static or a mobile erector launcher.
The missile was most likely a Scud-B or one of its derivatives, like the Iranian Shehab-1 or the North Korean Hwasong-5. The original Soviet version has a range of up to 300 kilometers, a warhead weighting 985 kg, and an accuracy of around 450 meters.
Reports of Hezbollah first obtaining Scud-type missiles go as far back as 2010. The supplier was none other than Syria.
The first evidence of the group actually having such missiles came on March 28 and 29, when Syrian government forces uncovered an underground complex with a camouflage Scud erector launcher at the town of Hawsh al-Sayyid Ali, which is the central governorate of Homs right on the border with Lebanon. The town of a stronghold of Hezbollah.
Hezbollah was badly hit during the previous war in Lebanon, but the ongoing confrontation, which broke out after the start of the war in Iran, revealed that the group’s missile arsenal is still a credible threat.
In recent days, the group released footage showing its fighters launching several types of tactical ballistic missiles and heavy artillery rockets at targets in northern and central Israel. It remains unclear, however, how successful these attacks were.
Israel’s multi-layered air defense network performed very well at the start of the war on Iran, but its effectiveness dropped in recent days under the pressure of daily missile attacks by the Islamic Republic. Hezbollah is likely intensifying its missile and rocket attacks to take advantage of this.
