Hezbollah launched several salvos of rockets from Lebanon at northern Israel on October 9, causing a number of casualties.
In separate statements, Hezbollah said it struck gatherings and bases of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) close to the Lebanese border, including the settlement of Kiryat Shemona, as well as deep into northern Israel including in areas located near the port city of Haifa and in the city of Safed.
The IDF said that two “missiles” were intercepted over the Carmel region and later reported that a salvo of some 40 rockets were launched at the Haifa area. An additional salvo of some 20 rockets targeted Kiryat Shemona and more than 90 rockets were also fired at Safed, according to the military.
The attack on Kiryat Shemona killed two people. Meanwhile in Haifa, at least five other people were wounded. Heavy damage was also reported in Safed.
In addition to the deadly rocket attacks, Hezbollah announced that its fighters clashed with IDF troops, preventing them from advancing near the southern Lebanese towns of Ras al-Naqoura, Blida, Mays al-Jabal, and Labouneh villages.
The troops were targeted with rockets, artillery, anti-tank guided missiles, and even suicide drones, according to the group.
From its side, the IDF announced that it had carried out many strikes on southern Lebanon, targeting cells of Hezbollah fighters, weapon depots, drone storage sites, rocket launchers and tunnels, as well as observation and sniper posts.
The clashes on the Lebanese-Israeli border first broke out after the start of the war in the Gaza Strip, with Hezbollah launching attacks in support of the Palestinian enclave. Israel escalated its attacks on Lebanon starting from September 17 and on September 27 it assassinated the Secretary-General of Hezbollah, Hassan Nassrallah. The IDF officially announced the launch of a ground operation in Lebanon on September 30.
All in all, the confrontation has so far resulted in 28 civilian deaths in Israel and the occupied Syrian Golan Heights as well as the deaths of at least 33 soldiers and security officers. On the Lebanese side, at least 2,141 people have been killed, including more than 500 members of Hezbollah.
