The Houthis (Ansar Allah) released two videos on October 6 showing drone and missile strikes on government forces and military positions in Yemen, as fighting intensified after a Saudi-backed counterattack near the Bab al-Mandab Strait and continued Houthi advances around Taiz.
One video showed what the group described as strikes on concentrations of Saudi-backed forces on several fronts, carried out with locally made “Shoawaz” first-person view suicide drones. The strikes targeted troops, vehicles and equipment.
A second video showed what the Houthis said were ballistic missile attacks on troop concentrations and weapons depots belonging to Saudi-backed forces in the Ras al-Arah area east of Bab al-Mandab. The footage was filmed by a surveillance drone.
The Houthis did not say when either attack took place, and the footage suggests the strikes may date from the previous round of fighting in September.
The videos came as Saudi-backed forces sought to reverse major Houthi gains along the Red Sea coast and around the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
Government forces said a day earlier that they had retaken positions in the Dhubab area and captured Mocha with heavy Saudi air support. The Houthis denied they had been driven from their positions and presented evidence proving that most of the area near Bab al-Mandab remains under their control.
At the same time, the Houthis expanded their positions around Taiz, advancing onto mountain routes leading toward the city and de facto besieging Saudi-backed forces.
The competing advances have intensified fighting across southwestern Yemen. Despite Saudi air power backing government forces, the Houthis maintain the upper hand in both Bab al-Mandab and Taiz. The battle is far from over, however.
