Late on July 24, the Saudi-led coalition intercepted four suicide drones and ballistic missile which were launched from Yemen, allegedly by the Houthis (as Ansar Allah is known).
The Saudi-led coalition claimed that the suicide drones were on their way to hit a number of targets in southern Saudi Arabia. So does the ballistic missile, that was heading to the Kingdom’s southern city of Jizan.
“The Houthi militia’s hostile attacks on civilians and civilian objects were all thwarted … We are taking operational measures to protect civilians and civilian objects from hostile attacks,” the coalition said in a statement shared by the Saudi Press Agency.
Usually, suicide drones are intercepted by warplanes of the Royal Saudi Air Force with air-to-air missiles. Ballistic missiles, however, are usually intercepted with MIM-104 Patriot surface-to-air missile systems deployed by the coalition or its allies, like the US.
The Houthis have not claimed responsibility for the attack attempts, yet. The group keeps some of its attack on the Kingdom in secret, or announces them days later.
The Saudi-led coalition has recently improved its defense capabilities. Nevertheless, the Houthis are still carrying out successful attacks on Saudi Arabia with their suicide drones, remotely-controlled booby-trapped boats, ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and heavy artillery rockets.
