The Houthis (Ansar Allah) on August 21 released video footage showing a series of drone strikes that targeted Saudi-backed Yemen government forces along the country’s west coast and in the central province of Marib.
The 10-minute video shows dozens of strikes that hit fighters, pickup trucks, engineering vehicles, anti-aircraft guns, and artillery, as well as fortified posts, fuel and ammunition depots. The Houthis didn’t specify when the strikes took place, but the timing of the release suggests that they were carried out during the ongoing escalation in Yemen.
According to the Houthis, the strikes were carried out using Rujum, a bomber drone based on the Chinese-made YD6-1000S hexacopter.
The drone has a 44-minute flight time with a 2 kg payload. It has been modified by the group to carry mainly 60 mm mortar rounds.
The strikes were carried out from a relatively high altitude, and still the hits were extremely accurate, which indicates that the operators are highly experienced.
Notably, one of the strikes killed an American-made M1A2S Abrams main battle tank of the Saudi military. This confirms that the kingdom still has troops in Yemen, despite recent reports of a limited withdrawal as part of preparations to launch a major offensive against the Houthis led by Yemeni government forces.
The Houthis announced a “maritime blockade” against Saudi Arabia last month, and since then, the group has carried out a series of attacks targeting Saudi airports, oil facilities, Yemeni government forces, infrastructure in the country, and tankers in the Red Sea.
Just a day earlier, the group said it struck an airport and a facility belonging to state-owned oil giant Aramco in Saudi Arabia’s southern Najran region with one-way attack drones.
The latest footage shows that the Houthis remain the dominant force in Yemen and are prepared to face any escalation by Saudi Arabia and its allies.
