On May 29, the Houthis announced that they had attacked King Khalid Air Base in the southern Saudi province of ‘Asir.
The attack, which took place in the early morning, was carried out with a Qasef-2K suicide drone. The Qasef-2K is a copy of the Iranian Ababil-2, with a range of up to 150 km. The drone is armed with a high-explosive fragmentation, HE-FRAG, warhead equipped with a proximity fuze.
“This attack came as a response to the continuation of the siege and aggression on our dear country,” Brig. Gen. Yahya Sari, a spokesman for the Yemeni group, said in a brief statement.
From its side, the Saudi-led coalition claimed that the drone was “intercepted and destroyed” over the Kingdom’s southern region.
This was the second attack by the Houthis on King Khalid Air Base this week. The first attack on the base took place late on May 28. Back then, the Saudi-led coalition claimed that two drones were intercepted.
The Houthis are mounting more and more pressure on Saudi Arabia. A day earlier, the group shared footage from a recent large-scale ground operation inside the Kingdom’s territory. The footage showed dozens of Saudi soldiers being killed.
