The Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen announced early on April 27 that they had struck a British oil tanker in the Red Sea and shot down a United States drone over northern Yemen.
“Our naval forces [on April 26] targeted a British oil ship, Andromeda Star, in the Red Sea with a number of appropriate naval missiles and hit it directly,” Houthi military spokesman Brigade General Yahya Sarea said in a statement.
“On Thursday [April 25], our air defense forces succeeded in shooting down an American MQ-9 drone in the airspace of Saada Governorate [in northern Yemen], while it was carrying out hostile missions and it was targeted by a suitable missile,” he added.
The spokesman also stressed that the Houthis “will continue to carry out more military operations in support of the Palestinian people until the Israeli siege and aggression against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip stop,” the spokesman said.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Agency said in a warning notice on April 26 that a ship was damaged off Yemen after a missile attack. It didn’t identify the ship nor gave further details, however.
On April 27, the U.S. Central Command confirmed in a statement that the UK-owned, Panamanian flagged and Seychelles operated tanker Andromeda Star sustained “minor damage” after the Houthis fired three anti-ship ballistic missiles from Yemen at the Red Sea.
The command said that one of the missiles landed near another ship, the Maisha, an Antiqua/Barbados flagged, Liberia operated vessel.
Separately, the Pentagon confirmed on April 26 that an MQ-9 Reaper combat drone, valued at around $30 million, crashed in Yemen a day earlier and said that it was investigating whether it was shot down by the Houthis. Video footage posted to social media showed the drone engulfed in fire falling from the sky over Saada, which suggest that it was indeed shot down.
The Houthis, who are backed by Iran, have attacked dozens of vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the U.S. and the UK in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean since last November in response to the Israeli war and siege on Gaza.
In addition, the group carried out several drone and missile attacks against Eilat and shot down three U.S. combat drones, including the last one over Saada.
The U.S. and the UK have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen in an attempt to deter the group since January. At least 37 people were killed and 30 others were wounded in these strikes. However, the capabilities of the Houthis were not degraded and the group was not deterred.
