Early on May 18, the Houthis (Ansar Allah) launched two more ballistic missiles at Ben Gurion Airport in central Israel from Yemen in response to the war in the Gaza Strip.
Ben Gurion was attacked with a Palestine-2 and a Zulfiqar ballistic missiles, Houthi military spokesman Brigadier General Yahya Saree said in a statement, adding that the attack “forced millions of occupying Zionists to rush to shelters and halted air traffic at the airport for nearly an hour.”
The Palestine-2 is a two-stage solid-fueled hypersonic missile that appears to be derivative from Iran’s first hypersonic missile Fattah-1. It has a range of over 2,150 kilometers and a top speed equivalent to 16 times the speed of sound, according to the Houthis.
Meanwhile, the older Zulfiqar is a single stage liquid-propellant missile with a detachable warhead. It is thought to be an improved copy of the Iranian-made Rezvan with a range of over 2,000 kilometers.
Sirens sounded across central Israel amid the attack in the early morning. Later, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said that a single ballistic missile was successfully intercepted by air defenses.. The reason for the discrepancy in figures was unclear, but suggested that one had fallen short.
In the same statement on the double missile attack, Brig. Gen. Saree claimed responsibility for a drone attack that Israel said it foiled a day earlier, revealing that the target was also Ben Gurion.
Earlier this month, Israel resumed strikes on Yemen as the United States suddenly halted an operation launched in mid-March against the Houthis. In response, the group vowed to impose “a comprehensive air blockade” on Israel.
The latest attack by the Houthis came just two days after the IDF targeted infrastructure at the Houthi-controlled ports of al-Hodeidah and Salif in the western Yemeni province of al-Hodeida. The military later said that it will take the Houthis about a month to restore the two ports.
