The Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen announced on September 28 that they had fired a ballistic missile at Ben Gurion Airport near the central Israeli city of Tel Aviv in support of the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.

In a statement, Houthi military spokesman Brigade General Yahya Sarea said that the group launched “an operation targeting Jaffa Airport, known in Israel as Ben Gurion, during the arrival of the criminal [Prime Minister] Benjamin Netanyahu,” noting that the operation was carried out with a Palestine 2 ballistic missile.

“The Yemeni Armed Forces, along with all the honorable and free people of the nation, will continue to respond to the crimes of the Israeli enemy and will not hesitate to raise the level of escalation in response to the requirements of the stage and to participate in the defense of Gaza and Lebanon,” the spokesman added.

The missile was fired shortly after the Houthis vowed that “the resistance won’t be broken,” in response to the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed in an Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) strike in Beirut on September 27.

The leader of the Houthis affirmed that the missile was aimed and timed to coincide with Netanyahu’s landing in Israel after returning from New York. In a televised speech, Abdul Malik al-Houthi also vowed that the death of Nasrallah “will not be in vain.”

The IDF announced that the missile was intercepted by its Arrow long-range missile defense system “outside the country’s borders.” However, Israeli Police said that the remains of the missile fell near the Jerusalem-area settlement of Tzur Hadassah, causing slight damage, police said.

The Houthis, who are backed by Iran, have attacked dozens of vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the United States and the United Kingdom in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea since last November in response to the Israeli war on the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip.

In addition, the group launched dozens of drones and missiles at Israel and shot down at least ten American-made combat drones over Yemen and nearby waters.

The U.S. and the UK have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen since January. Israel also launched an unprecedented attack against the Red Sea port of al-Hodeidah last July after a deadly Houthi drone strike on the city of Tel Aviv.

The strikes on Yemen, which have so far claimed the lives of more than 50 people and left more than 200 others wounded, are yet to deter the Houthis or damage their military capabilities.
