On July 1, the Houthis (Ansar Allah) released footage of a recent drone attack which targeted a military camp of the Saudi-led coalition in al-Wadi’a area right on the Yemeni-Saudi border.
The attack, which took place on June 22, saw the Houthis launching ten Qasef-2K suicide drones at gatherings in the al-Wadi’a camp.
The Qasef-2K suicide drone is a copy of the Iranian Ababil-2. The drone has a range of up to 150 kilometers. It is armed with a high-explosive fragmentation (HE-FRAG) warhead that explodes 20 meters over the designated target thanks to an advanced proximity fuze.
The attack footage, which were apparently filmed by a reconnaissance team of the Houthis, shows one of the suicide drones exploding right over a gathering of Saudi-backed fighters in the al-Wadi’a camp.
The footage also revealed that Qasef-2K suicide drones are typically launched with the use of detachable rocket boosters.
The Houthis claim that as many as 60 Saudi-backed Yemeni fighters and Saudi officers were killed or wounded as a result of the attack.
In the last few weeks, the Houthis targeted several camps of the Saudi-led coalition. On June 28, the Yemeni group attacked a training camp of the coalition and several other targets in southern Saudi Arabia. On June 29, the group targeted two camps in the central Yemeni province of Ma’rib.
The recent attacks highlight the Houthis’ growing offensive capabilities. The Saudi-led coalition and its proxies are yet to act against this threat.
