The head of Yemen’s Supreme Political Council, which is led by the Houthis (Ansar Allah), has warned that the group’s missile forces have the capability to target all member states of the Saudi-led coalition.

Mahdi al-Mashat made the warning while attending a public gathering in the western Yemeni city of Hudaydah on September 10.

The Houthis missile forces have achieved deterrence capabilities similar to those possessed by the naval forces, the leader said.

“Last year we [stated] … that the Navy had weapons with which we could strike any point in the sea from anywhere in Yemen, sending a message of deterrence to the forces of war,” he stressed. “Now, I am sending them the following message on the ground level: It seems that you need to try our missile force, which can strike any target in any city in the aggression countries from anywhere in Yemen, not limited to a specific region.”

The Houthis took over much of Yemen after a successful uprising in 2014. The next year, Saudi Arabia, backed by several Arab countries and the United States, launched an invasion to overthrow the group. Over the next eight years, more than 377,000 people were killed in the war.

Last April, several reports revealed that Saudi Arabia finally made the decision to end the war and help broker an intra-Yemeni peace agreement. Riyadh’s decision was directly motivated by a rapprochement with Tehran, the main ally of the Houthis.

At the time, Saudi officials held a round of direct talks with the Houthis at the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, which is held by the group.

The situation in Yemen stabilized after the talks and both sides exchanged prisoners following the talks. However, not much progress was made in the intra-Yemen peace process and the country remains split between the Houthis and the allies of the Saudi-led coalition.

The Houthis’ new warning will not likely lead to an escalation. The group may have made the warning to improve its stance before resuming talks with Saudi Arabia.
