On June 11, an attack with an improvised explosive device (IED) targeted a civilian car in the eastern countryside of Daraa in southern Syria.
Local sources said the incident took place on a road between the towns of al-Sourah and al-Hrak, near a checkpoint of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA).
According to the Syrian state TV, three civilians were injured in the IED attack. Two of the wounded were reportedly a woman and her daughter from the nearby town of Elmah. The third person, who may have been the target, is yet to be identified.
There was no immediate claim for the attack. Nevertheless, ISIS remains the main suspect. The terrorist group’s cells are known to be highly-active in northern and eastern Daraa.
In the last few months, the SAA amassed a large force in Daraa. Many sources reported that a security operation is being prepared. However, this is yet to happen. The Russian Military Police are now working to improve coordination between local fighters and Syrian authorities through talks.
And after the Russians have had a good talk with the locals they should have a good talk to the Iranians too, just talking to the locals only solves half the problem, which means if the other half of the problem isn’t solved as well, the problem will just reappear in time. I’ve been hoping the Russians could do this, down here in the south they’ve been an absolutely huge help to Assad, because as bad as thing got down here, without Russian intervention they would’ve been a hell of a lot worse. Assad’s just made a move in the right direction, I’m not sure if the Russians gave him a good shove or not but it doesn’t matter who’s idea it was, it was a good one. A new Baathist prime minister is just what Syria needs right now, the locals in Daraa will hopefully recognize this as a genuine offer of inclusion and solidarity, I can’t think of anything better Assad could’ve offered, so hopefully the locals feel the same way too. But it has to be backed up with some substantive changes as well, just putting a Baathist into the job and not giving him any teeth won’t work, he has to be the voice of the people and their instrument for change, and Iran has to start listening to him.
