On Monday night, a civilian home spontaneously exploded in Arlington, Virginia. The explosion occured after police were called to the home after neighbors reported someone firing a flare gun.
The incident took place on the 800 block of North Burlington Street. Police were called out to a report of “possible shots fired”. A man inside the home reportedly initially fired a flare gun out the window 30 to 40 times. After officers got to the scene and wanted to search the building, the owner of the home, James Yoo, barricaded himself inside and refused to make contact with police. The suspect also fired multiple shots at the officers from inside the home. Then, at 8:45 pm, an explosion suddenly occurred, leveling the entire property.
“When the police tried to search the suspect’s place of residence, he fired several shots inside the house. Subsequently, an explosion occurred in an apartment building,” Arlington police said.
A fire broke out after the explosion. Several police officers received “minor injuries” as a result of the incident.
Arlington County police spokesperson Ashley Savage told NBC News that officials have yet to confirm if there were any deaths. She said the suspect was ‘inside’ the home during the explosion.
Some interesting details about Yoo were reported by the media. Allegedly:

- He had a previous encounter with the FBI
- He filed countless frivolous lawsuits against his own sister and wife
