The al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Hamas Movement, released on April 20 video footage showing its fighters clashing with the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), for the first time since the military renewed its offensive in the Gaza Strip.

The footage, which was taken in the Tuffah neighborhood to the east of Gaza City in the north of the Strip, shows fighters targeting a Merkava 4M main battle tank, a Namer armored personnel carrier and a D9 armored bulldozer with rocket propelled grenades.

On the same day, the al-Qassam Brigades issued a statement claiming responsibility for a complex ambush that took place in the area of Beit Lahia, also located in northern Gaza, a day earlier.

The ambush claimed the life of an Israeli soldier and left others wounded, including one seriously. This was the first time the IDF had taken losses since renewing its offensive in Gaza on March 18, shattering a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement that was brokered by the United States, Egypt and Qatar last January.

Separately, the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the al-Quds Brigades, released two videos in recent days showing a mortar and rocket attack that targeted gatherings of the IDF in the area of Rafah in the south of the Strip, as well as two quadcopter drones which were downed over Gaza City.

Also on April 20, the Hamas-run health ministry reported the death of 44 Palestinians in Israeli strikes on Gaza. The deaths brought the toll from the IDF renewed offensive on Gaza to 1,827.

In total, the Israeli war on the Strip has so far claimed the lives of more than 51,201, with women and children making the majority.

Since renewing its offensive, the IDF has occupied around 30% of Gaza’s territories. Most of the advance was in southern Gaza, where the military has been working to establish a new security zone between Rafah and the nearby city of Khan Younis known as the Morag Corridor.

Israel continues to engage in talks on a new ceasefire and hostage exchange deal with Hamas, despite escalating its offensive in Gaza.

Nevertheless, Israeli demands have been increasing. Meanwhile, Hamas continues to demand a clear path towards a permanent ceasefire and a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza in exchange for the remaining 59 hostages it continues to hold, which includes at least 24 who are believed to be alive.
