On January 10, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Hamas Movement, released videos documenting recent attacks on the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in the northern Gaza Strip.
The videos show Hamas fighters blowing up IDF main battle tanks with rocket-propelled grenades, shelling gatherings with rockets and mortars as well as clashing with Israeli troops and targeting their positions in Gaza City and nearby areas.
Another video released by the groups shows a small reconnaissance quadcopter drone that was downed over the city of Beit Lahia, also located in northern Gaza.
In recent weeks, the IDF withdrew troops from several parts of northern Gaza, likely as a result of the fierce resistance by Hamas and other Palestinian armed factions. Israel shifted focus to the central and southern parts of the Strip. Fierce battles are now taking place there, especially in the al-Buraij and Nuseirat refugee camps in the central as well as in the city of Khan Yunis and the town of Khuza’a in the south.
The IDF acknowledged the death of ten troops in Gaza in the last 48 hours, four of them in clashes with Hamas and other armed factions. Dozens others were reportedly wounded.
Recent setbacks in Gaza could force Israel to accept some agreement with Hamas. However, the group will not likely agree to release any of the Israeli hostages held in Gaza without a long ceasefire or a complete halt of the war.
