On August 24, the Iranian military kicked off a large-scale military exercise to test its combat and reconnaissance drones.

Troops from the four units of the military, namely the Ground Force, Navy, Air Force and Air Defense Force, and more than 150 drones are reportedly taking part in the two-day exercise, which covers all areas across Iran, from the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman to the northern territories.

Vice Admiral Seyed Mahmoud Mousavi, the spokesman for the exercise, said on the first day that surveillance drones successfully conducted intelligence-gathering and patrol missions. Combat drones also practiced detecting and destroying enemy targets.

Yasir, Sadeq, Yazdan and Ababil-3 tactical drones, Pelican VTOL [vertical takeoff and landing] naval drones, in addition to Mohajer-6 ISTAR [intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance] drones were flown from different bases across Iran and monitored the country’s frontiers.

On the second day of the exercise, Mousavi said various types of combat drones hit the pre-determined targets in the general area of the exercises with precision and high-accuracy weapons in the major operational phase of the maneuvers.

Kaman, Mohajer, Ababil, Karrar, and Bavar drones used local weapons, including Qa’em glide bombs, Almas missiles and MK-82 unguided bombs, to target positions ranging from command and control centers to fuel tanks, ammunition depots, and radar and missile systems.

Iran has been developing drones since the 1980s. In the recent years, the country invested more than ever in its drone program in response to serious threats from the US and its Middle Eastern allies, first and foremost Israel.

The new exercise, which demonstrates Iran’s vast drone capabilities, came amid US claims of a deal to export Iranian-made drones to Russia for use in the war in Ukraine.

Russia condemned Israel’s strikes on Syrian territory and demanded compliance with international law. This was reported by TASS with reference to a press conference by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

“We strongly condemned Israel’s dangerous practice of strikes against Syrian territory, including the very disturbing episode of the attack on Damascus International Airport on June 10 and the subsequent strikes on the port of Tartus,” he said.

Lavrov also noted that Israel needs to respect the sovereignty of Syria, as well as comply with UN Security Council resolutions.

Earlier it was reported that the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry called the murder of Dugina barbaric.
