Palestinian fighters in the Gaza Strip continue to put on fierce resistance, inflicting some serious losses on the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).
On January 31, the military wing of the Hamas Movement, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, released a video showing its fighters targeting Israeli main battle tanks, bulldozers and armored personnel carriers with rocket-propelled grenades in the Tell al-Hawa district to the west of Gaza City in northern Gaza. At least one Merkava 4M tank was completely destroyed.
Another video released by the group shows recent clashes in the al-Maghazi and al-Breij refugee camps in central Gaza, where several tanks and other vehicles were also hit.
The al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad -the second largest armed faction in Gaza-, also released a video on January 31 showing its fighters shelling gatherings and positions of the IDF in central Gaza with mortars.
It’s worth noting that the IDF announced the death of four troops on January 31, including a commander from the Israeli Air Force’s elite Shaldag unit.
Since the start of ground operations inside the Strip, at least 224 Israeli troops have been killed. More than 12,000 others were reportedly wounded.
During the first weeks of its ground operations, the IDF occupied most of northern Gaza. However, it later withdrew most of its forces from there and shifted focus to the central and southern parts of the Strip. Currently, the most intense battles are taking place in the southern city of Khan Younis.
All in all, Israel is yet to achieve any of its stated goals. Hamas is still heavily-armed and in charge and none of the Israeli hostages have been freed by forces so far.
