The Russian military has destroyed a Ukrainian British-made makeshift short-range air defense system based on the AIM-132 ASRAAM air-to-air missile.
Video footage showing a Lancet loitering munition attacking the system were posted to social networks on May 7. The pinpoint strike set the system on fire, completely destroying it. It is still unclear in what part of the special military operation zone the system was targeted.
The system, whose codename has not been unveiled yet, was developed especially for Kiev forces by a joint team from the United Kingdom Ministry of Defense and European defense giant MBDA within four months. It consists of a twin-launcher for British-made ASRAAM missiles mounted on the back of a Supacat 6×6 vehicle along with a Hawkeye electro-optical guidance system.
The heat-seeking ASRAAM missile has a range of 25 kilometers, but only when launched from air. The range is greatly reduced when the missile is launched from the ground.
Deliveries of the makeshift air defense system began last year. It is unknown how many systems are currently in service with Kiev forces.
The system was especially developed to provide Ukraine with short-range air defense against Russian attack helicopters, cruise missiles, suicide drones and loitering munitions. Yet, it has clearly failed against the Lancet.
The Lancet was developed by the ZALA Aero Group, a subsidiary of Russia’s defense giant Kalashnikov Concern. The company produces two versions of the loitering munition, the Izdeliye-52 with an endurance of 30 minutes and a one-kilogram warhead and the larger Izdeliye-51 that has an endurance of 40 minutes and is armed with a warhead weighting three kilograms.
The loitering munition flies towards the designated area with a GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system. After arriving in the area, the operator utilizes an onboard electro-optical system via a two-way data-link to detect, track and lock on the target. A laser-ranging system then controls the detonation of the warhead.
Ukrainian attempts to stop Lancet loitering munitions with air defense fire, electronic warfare or countermeasures have been mostly unsuccessful.
According to Lostarmour.info, a website that tracks and documents military losses, the Russian military has damaged or destroyed 147 air defense, radar, electronic warfare and communication systems using Lancet loitering munitions since the start of the special military operation in Ukraine.
