Russia’s Kalashnikov Group released on April 2 a video showing recent strikes with Kub-BLA loitering munitions against Kiev forces in the special military operation zone in Ukraine.
The video includes footage of seven strikes against posts and gatherings of Kiev forces. Klashinkov said that some of the targets were located “up to and over 50 kilometers” away from the frontline in the special military operation zone, without providing any further details.
The KUB-BLA was developed by the ZALA Aero Group, a subsidiary of Kalashnikov, to engage static targets, like gatherings of manpower and fortified positions.
The loitering munition has an endurance of 30 minutes and a speed of 80 to 130 kilometers per hour. It is thought to be guided by a GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system.
Typically, the KUB-BLA is armed with a high explosive fragmentation warhead that weighs three kilograms. The warhead explodes over the intended target with the help of a laser proximity fuse. This maximizes the damage inflicted on the target.
The Russian military has been using the Kub-BLA and other types of loitering munitions, like the more advanced Lancet -which was also developed by the ZALA Aero Group-, since the beginning of its special operation in Ukraine more than two years ago with much success.
