The Russian Ministry of Defense announced on July 29 that another American-made M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) of Kiev forces had been destroyed.
In a statement, the ministry said that the MLRS was struck by an Iskander-M tactical ballistic missile close to the settlement of Novotroitskoye in the Donetsk direction. The launcher was detected and tracked back to its hideout right after firing, according to drone footage released by the ministry.
The missile strike destroyed the launcher, an accompanying vehicle and left 15 Ukrainian troops dead or wounded, the ministry added.
The Iskander-M used to take out the launcher has a range of nearly 500 kilometers. It can be armed with different conventional warheads, including a cluster munitions warhead, a fuel–air explosive enhanced-blast warhead, a high-explosive fragmentation warhead, an earth penetrator for bunker busting and an electromagnetic pulse device for anti-radar missions.
The highly-maneuverable missile is guided by a GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system. It can be also equipped with an optical seeker with a digitized scene-mapping area correlator system for terminal guidance.
The United Kingdom, Norway, France and Germany supplied at least 16 American-made MLRS and MARS II -the German-made version of the system- to Kiev forces after the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine.
Each MARS II or MLRS launcher can be armed with up to 12 M30/M31 series GMLRS GPS-guided rockets, which have a range of more than 70 kilometers, or two MGM-140 ATACMS tactical ballistic missiles, which have a range from 165 to 300 depending on the version, in two separate pods.
The Russian military has already destroyed or damaged many of Ukraine’s MLRS and MARS II systems as well as several of around 40 M142 HIMARS -a lighter, wheeled system that fires the same types of projectiles- which were delivered to Ukraine by the United States over the last two years.
