An Iranian-made drone crashed on August 28 close to the government-held town of Muhasan in the southern Deir Ezzor countryside.
Videos posted to social networks showed the wreckage of the drone, which was identified as a Qods Mohajer-6 due to its unique emergency landing parachute. Blasts were reported over Muhasan and nearby towns around the time the drone crashed. This suggests that the drone may have been shot down.
The Mohajer-6 is a reconnaissance and combat drone capable of carrying a multispectral surveillance payload and up to four precision-guided munitions. The drone has an endurance of more than 12 hours and an operational range of 200-500 kilometers.
It is still unclear if the drone that crashed near Muhasan was being operated by the Syrian Arab Army, or Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The United States-led coalition which maintains bases in areas held by its proxy, the Syrian Democratic Forces, in Deir Ezzor may have shot down the drone. If this was the case, the U.S. Central Command will most likely address the incident soon.
It’s worth noting that tensions have been on the rise in Deir Ezzor as a result of repeated attacks on U.S. bases in the governorate and strikes against Iran-backed forces there.
