A British-made long-range radar of the United States military in Bahrain was struck on June 11 during a large-scale attack carried out by Iran in response to earlier American strikes.
The radar, an AR-327, is stationed atop Jabal al-Dukhan, which is Bahrain’s highest point, rising 134 meters above sea level.
First evidence of the radar getting hit came just a few hours after the Iranian attack, when a photo showing smoke rising from the site surfaced on social networks. Later, satellite images from the European Sentinel-2 confirmed that the radar was struck.
At the time of the attack, Iranian media, namely the semi-official Mehr and Fars news agencies, reported that “the communication antennas and radar facilities of the Patriot system” of the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet — which is based in Bahrain — were targeted with one-way attack drones.
The AR-327, developed by the United Kingdom’s BAE System, is a long-range, 3D tactical air defense radar. It features a highly mobile, solid-state design and operates in the S-band to provide early warning, threat tracking, and interception, with a range around 470 kilometers.
The radar deployed atop Jabal al-Dukhan reportedly served as a major node in the regional, U.S.-linked early warning and missile defense architecture, playing a key role in monitoring Gulf shipping lanes and aerial approaches to the Strait of Hormuz.
A single AR-327 costs around $40 million, but with specific configuration, logistical support, and integration with command systems the end price could be much more.
The strike on Jabal al-Dukhan is certain to have degraded U.S. early warning and missile defenses capabilities in Bahrain and the wider region.
It also proved that Iran is still capable of carrying out effective precision strikes, despite all American attempts to boost air defenses amid the ceasefire.
