Iran's IRGC Tested Medium-Range Rockets In Syria’s Deir Ezzor: Monitoring Group

Experts from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had tested medium-range artillery rockets in the Syrian governorate of Deir Ezzor, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on August 13.

According to the London-based monitoring group, the rocket test took place in the outskirts of the town of al-Mayadin. IRGC-backed Syrian and Iraqi forces are known to be deployed inside the town and in its outskirts.

“These rockets and launchers were manufactured in weapons manufacturing centers belonging to the Iranian militias under the supervision of experts of Iranian nationality in the outskirts of al-Mayadeen,” the group said in its report.

The SOHR didn’t provide any additional information about the rockets or their specifications. However, it is possible that the monitoring group was referring to some type of improvised rocket-assisted munitions (IRAMs) which were seen with IRGC-affiliated forces in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon and even Gaza in the past. These IRAMs have a limited range. However, they carry a very heavy warhead.

IRGC-backed forces in Deir Ezzor have been working to develop their capabilities for a while now. In July, the SOHR revealed that the IRGC tested an Ababil-3 combat drone in the southern countryside of governorate.

It is known that IRGC-backed forces are mainly present in Deir Ezzor to counter ISIS cells as well as to secure the border line with Iraq.
