Early on January 28, a new rocket attack targeted the US Camp Victory in the international airport of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.
According to the Iraqi Security Media Cell, six Katyusha [107 mm] rockets landed at the military camp and the airport. One of the rockets directly hit an out-of-service Airbus A300B4 airliner of Iraqi Airways, severally damaging it. The remaining rockets inflicted some damage on one of the airport’s runways.
No casualties were reported as a result of the attack, which didn’t effect regular operations at Baghdad International Airport.
The rockets were launched from the district of Abu Ghraib, which is located to the northwest of Baghdad International Airport. In the district, Iraqi security forces found the improved launcher that was used to carry out the attack along with three 107 mm rockets that failed to fire.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, so far. However, security media cell said that evidence pointing out at the perpetrators was found.
Pro-Iranian forces attacked the US Camp Victory at least twice in the first week of January to honor the memory of Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, Deputy-Commander of the Popular Mobilization Units, and Iran’s Quds Force Commander Maj. Gen. Qassim Soleimani who were assassinated by the US around two years ago.
While pro-Iranian forces may be also behind the new rocket attack on the camp, it is also possible that the attack was carried out by allies of the US as a false-flag operation. Pro-Iranian forces warned from such provocations following the January 13 Baghdad rocket attack and the alleged January 15 drone attack on Balad Air Base.
