Iraq asks Russian support in restoring historic sites damaged by ISIS

According to a Russian media outlet, Iraq’s Ambassador to Russia said that Baghdad has requested Moscow’s assistance in the restoration of historic sites and cultural heritage damaged by ISIS.

On Friday, Iraq’s Ambassador to Russia Ismieal Shafiq Muhsin said that Baghdad is requesting Moscow’s assistance in the restoration of historic sites and cultural heritage damaged by ISIS in Iraq.

“After 2003, historical monuments and a large number of cultural heritage objects were damaged in Iraq. Thousands of monuments were stolen and destroyed, especially during the Daesh occupation of Iraqi cities in 2014, when the richest and most important regions of Iraq were captured. Terrorist groups have long supplemented their financing by selling stolen, priceless cultural heritage objects to their international agents. I wish to call on the relevant organizations in Russia and in the world to help the Iraqi government return its historic heritage objects,” Muhsin said.

However, Yesterday, A British archaeological studies institute in Iraq reported that ISIS terrorist group has destroyed a 2,000-year-old gate near the Iraqi city of Mosul; the structure is known as the Gate of God, and used to guard the ancient Assyrian city Nineveh.

It was also reported by a media activist that ISIS destroyed many of Iraqi historic sites and monuments, including the Assyrian city of Nimrud, the Winged Bulls, and the Mosul National Museum.

Since June 2014, Iraq has been observing ISIS terrorist activities. The US-led coalition started its operations allegedly hitting ISIS, although many believe ISIS is a creation of the west.

However, the 66-member coalition has been failing to control ISIS terrorism, when a concerted push by Iraqi forces are dealing terrorists and forcing it out of the central city of Ramadi, the capital of the western Anbar Province
