Iraqi Forces Hunt Down ISIS Cells In Kirkuk, Saladin (Video, Photos)

Iraqi government forces continue to hunt down ISIS cells in the northern region of the country, where the terrorist group is very active.

On September 6, F-16 fighter jets of the Iraqi Air Force carried out a series of airstrikes on hideouts of ISIS in the province of Kirkuk.

Spokesman for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Major General Yehia Rasool, said that the airstrikes destroyed three hideouts of the terrorist group in Zaghaytun valley. The hideouts were located by the Iraqi intelligence. The results of the airstrikes are yet to be revealed.

A day later, on September 7, the Counter-Terrorism Service conducted a combing operation in Makhoul Mount in the province of Saladin.

According to Maj. Gen. Rasool, three ISIS terrorists were killed in the course of the operation.  Weapons, ammunition, communication equipment and important documents of the terrorist group were also seized.

ISIS cells have been very active in northern Iraq, especially in Kirkuk and Saladin. The terrorist group’s cells carried dozens of attacks against government forces and civilians in the region over the past month. Some of the recent attacks that took place in Kirkuk targeted the Kurdish Peshmerga.

Iraqi government forces are inflicting some serious human and material losses on ISIS remnants. However, the influence of the terrorist group does not appear to be declining. The group’s insurgency will likely go on for years.
