Iraqi Forces Shell ISIS’ Positions On Border With Syria (Photos)

On August 18, the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) rocket launchers shelled several positions and hideouts of ISIS on the Syrian-Iraqi border, according to the PMU’s media wing. The source said that direct hits were reported.

“High coordination between the security forces and the PMU to monitor any movements of the organization [ISIS] on the Syrian side,” said Saadi Nasser, a field commander of the PMU in the western province of Anbar. The added that “the intelligence role has become a cornerstone to secure the western areas of Anbar.”

Last June, the Iraqi military and the PMU shelled several positions of ISIS in eastern Syria. Back then, Iraqi forces claimed that they were preventing ISIS cells from sneaking into Iraq. However, in reality the Iraqis were supporting an attack of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on ISIS in the eastern Syrian area of al-Dashisha.

Despite of the PMU’s claims, the new strikes are likely aimed at supporting the upcoming military operation of the SDF against the remaining fighters of ISIS along the eastern bank of the Euphrates Rivers. Some of these fighters are stationed only 4km away from Iraq’s border.
