On July 22, the Iraqi Security Information Center announced in an official statement that the Iraqi military and the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) have launched a joint security operation against the remaining cells of ISIS in the Western Anbar desert near the border with Syria.
“A joint force of the army and the popular mobilization, supported by the army aviation, is clearing large areas of the Western Anbar desert from three directions towards the valley of Houran,” the Security Information Center said in its statement.
According to the Security Information Center, the operation will cover the area of al-Bu Auad, the village of al-Rah, the valley and dam of al-Ghri and the area of al-Hussiniyat.
Last week, the Iraqi military and Kurdish Peshmerga forces launched a similar security operation against ISIS cells in the area of Makhmur, southwest of the city of Erbit. As a result of the operation, several mountains in the area were secured.
These joint operations are mainly aimed at securing the Syrian-Iraqi border and at preventing the terrorist group from resupplying its remaining cells in central Iraq.
