Iraqi Resistance Says ‘Vital Target’ In Central Israel Was Attacked With Cruise Missile (Video)

On January 16, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI), an umbrella group of Iranian-backed armed factions, announced that it had attacked a “vital target” in central Israel in support of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.

The group didn’t reveal the nature of the target, but said in a statement that it was attacked with an “Arqab long-range cruise missile” in “the past days.”

The Arqab is thought to be an Iranian-made cruise missile that is designated as type “351” by the United States military and intelligence. The missile, which the Iranian-backed Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen call “Quds,” has a range of around 2,000 kilometers and carries a warhead weighing 450 kg.

The Israeli Defense Forces didn’t announce any attack on central Israel in recent days and there were no reports of blasts or interceptions in Hebrew media.

The IRI has launched several attacks against Israel since the war broke out in Gaza. Last week, the group said it attacked two targets close to the Jordan River Park in northern Israel and near the southernmost city of Eilat using “suitable weapons.”

In addition to the direct attacks on Israel, the IRI has so far launched more than 130 attacks against U.S. forces in Iraq and neighboring Syria. The aim of these attacks is to pressure Washington to end its unconditional support for the war on Gaza, which has so far claimed the lives of more than 23,000 Palestinains, mostly women and children.

The U.S. responded to some of the IRI’s attacks by launching strikes in both Iraq and Syria. Israel didn’t announce any retaliatory attacks. However, it was unofficially blamed for several recent strikes which targeted the Iraqi-Syrian border and were not claimed by the U.S. military.

Retaliatory strikes will not likely deter the IRI, which apparently posses a large arsenal of offensive weapons that includes ballistic missiles and suicide drones in addition to cruise missiles.
