ISIS Kills Ten Iraqi Fighters South Of Mosul. Security Forces Respond

On March 27, ISIS fighters conducted a hit and run attack on a position of the Iraqi Tribal Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) in the village of Kan’us south of Mosul city, the ISIS-linked news agency Amaq reported. Amaq said that ISIS fighters had killed ten members of the PMU in the attack.

Few hours following the ISIS attack, Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) launched an operation against ISIS cells in Kan’us. Spokesman for the Ninewa Operations Command, Brigadier General Mohammed al-Jubouri said that 18 ISIS fighters had been killed.

Brig. Gen. al-Jubouri also announced that ISF had captured several artillery pieces and rockets during another security operation, which had taken place in the village of al-Awinat, west of Mosul, near the Syrian Iraqi border.

Local observers suppose that ISIS cells in northern Iraq managed to re-establish a connection with the remaining units of ISIS in eastern Syria. Since December 2017, the US-led collation and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have not conducted any attack against these units. This has likely helped ISIS to resurface in the northern parts of Iraq.
