On March 25, ISIS’s news agency, Amaq, released photos documenting a recent attack by the group’s terrorists in the northern Malian region of Gao.

The attack, which took place on March 21, targeted a military base of the Malian Armed Forces near the town of Tessit in Ansongo district.

ISIS terrorists managed to storm the base following heavy clashes with Malian troops. According to Amaq, the terrorists captured seven military vehicles, three of which equipped with machine guns, during the attack. Before withdrawing the terrorists set the base on fire.

While the terrorist group claimed that “dozens” of Malian soldiers were killed, Mali reported 16 military fatalities on March 21. No all the service members were killed in ISIS’s attack on Tessit military base. Some lost their lives in an ambush carried out by unidentified gunmen in central Mali.

ISIS successful attack on Tessit military base came as France is working to end its nine-year military intervention in Mali.

In February, France along with its European allies announced the beginning of the withdrawal of troops from Mali, blaming the country’s government for obstructions in carrying out their military operations. Paris stated that the withdrawal was meant for its soldiers part of both Operation Barkhane and Takuba Task Force.

Currently Mali is relying on its own forces, the UN mission and Russian private military contractors to counter terrorist groups on its territory. The withdrawal of French troops had no real impact on the situation in the country.
