On November 24, Amaq, ISIS’ official news agency, released photos from a recent attack by the terrorist group’s wing in Western Africa, the Islamic State – West Africa Province (ISWAP).

The attack, which took place on November 19, targeted a base of the Nigerian Armed Forces (NAF) located near the town of Marte in the northeastern Nigerian province of Borno. ISWAP terrorists stormed the base after killing four personnel of the NAF and two local pro-government fighters.

Before withdrawing from the base, the terrorists burned down two armored personnel carriers, at least one of which was an Austrian-made Saurer 4K 4FA. They also seized a pickup truck, a motorcycle and loads of weapons.

This was not ISWAP most recent attack in Borno. On November 21, the group’s terrorists targeted a patrol of the NAF on the Mainok-Jakana road with an improvised explosive device (IED), killing two soldiers. On November 22, the terrorists targeted another patrol of the NAF near the town of Baga with an IED. Several soldiers were allegedly killed or wounded.

ISWAP presence in northeastern Nigeria will not likely end anytime soon. Nigerian government forces appear to be incapable of confronting the terrorist group in Borno, or in the nearby province of Yobe.
