On December 13, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced that two more troops were killed while fighting in the northern Gaza Strip a day earlier, bringing the death toll in ground operations against the Hamas Movement to 115.
The two are named as Col. Itzhak Ben Basat, head of the Golani Brigade’s commander’s team, and Sgt. Eran Aloni, of the Golani Brigade’s 51st Battalion. Both were killed during the same battle in which seven members of the Golani Brigade were killed when they were ambushed in Shejaiya, a Gaza City suburb.
Ben Basat, who was set to retire from the IDF but decided to stay on when the war broke out, is the most senior officer of the IDF to have been killed in the ground operations against Hamas. He previously served as head of the elite Yiftah Brigade.
In addition to the nine Israeli troops killed in the ambush, a soldier from the Combat Engineering Corps’ 614th Battalion, was killed in a separate incident in northern Gaza. The IDF said another three soldiers were seriously wounded.
It’s worth noting that more than 600 Israeli troops have been reportedly wounded since the start of ground operations in Gaza.
Separately, the IDF released video footage showing recent operations in Shejaiya and announced that it had carried out strikes against 250 targets in Gaza overnight.
Hamas welcomed the death of the last ten Israeli troops, calling the successful ambush in Shejaiya a testimony to the “failure” of the IDF. It also said that the Israeli leadership has no option but to withdraw from Gaza, warning the IDF of more losses.
Despite recent losses, Israel will not likely halt ground operations in Gaza any time soon. The war on the Strip may be the only thing keeping the government of Benjamin Netanyahu together.

can we also stop calling any idf unit “elite”? they’re repeatedly proving their incompetence in this ground attack…

the ambush sounds a bit like the warrenpoint ambush in northern ireland. the palestinians must have been watching and learning how the idf reacts to an event. spells real trouble for the idf as the palestinians evolve their tactics.
