The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said on October 22 that it was sure Hezbollah presumed new Secretary-General Hashem Safieddine was killed in a strike that targeted the southern suburbs of Lebanese capital, Beirut, more than two weeks ago.
Safieddine, the head of Hezbollah’s executive council, is presumed to be the successor of Nasrallah following his assassination on September 27.
The IDF said that Safieddine was killed alongside the head of Hezbollah’s intelligence division, Hussein Ali Hazima, during the strike on October 4. The strike hit what the military described as “an underground intelligence headquarters” of the group.
More than 25 members of Hezbollah’s intelligence division were at the headquarters when the strike was carried out, including other top commanders, according to the military.
“We reached [Hassan] Nasrallah, his replacement, and most of Hezbollah’s leadership. We will know how to reach anyone who threatens the security of Israel’s citizens,” IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi said in remarks released by the military.
Hezbollah has not yet confirmed or denied the death of Safieddine. The group, which remains without an official Secretary-General, is known to be very transparent about such issues.
The IDF announcement came just a few hours after Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the October 19 drone attack on the private residence of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The primer and his wife were not home at the time of the attack and no casualties were reported.
“The Islamic Resistance claims responsibility for the Caesarea operation and targeting Netanyahu’s home,” the head of Hezbollah’s media office, Mohammad Afif, said at a news conference on October 22.
Afif said that if in the previous attack Netanyahu was not hurt, “the coming days and nights and the [battle]fields are between us.” He appeared to be hinting that Hezbollah might carry out similar attempts in the future.
The clashes on the Lebanese-Israeli border first broke out after the start of the war in the Gaza Strip, with Hezbollah launching attacks in support of the Palestinian enclave. Israel escalated its attacks on Lebanon starting from September 17 and on September 30 it launched a limited ground operation along the border with the country.
Israeli attacks on Lebanon have so far claimed the lives of at least 2,546 people and left more than 11,862 others wounded.
