An Israeli soldier was killed, and another was seriously wounded, in an incident of so-called “friendly fire” in southern Lebanon over the night of April 3 and 4, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced.
The military said in a statement that the slain soldier was from the Commando Brigade’s Maglan Unit. It added that the incident occurred during an operation to arrest a suspect linked to Hezbollah in the town of Shebaa.
According to an initial probe, during the arrest, one soldier thought he identified suspects attempting to flee and opened fire. The gunfire killed the Israeli soldier and seriously wounded the other. The military said that it is further investigating the circumstances of the incident.
The death of the soldier brought the number of IDF troops killed in southern Lebanon since the start of ground operations there against Hezbollah amid the war with Iran to eleven. The group’s rocket attacks also claimed the lives of two civilians in northern Israel.
While the IDF is keeping pressure on all of southern Lebanon, in recent days it expanded operations in the central sector, advancing towards the towns of Beit Lif and Debl. The military also stepped up operations in the town of Khiam, located in the eastern sector of the region.
Hezbollah, from its side, continues to put on fierce resistance. Videos released recently by the group showed some Israeli losses.
One video shows an attack with first-person view suicide drones on a IDF D9 armored bulldozer and Namer armored personnel carrier in Khiam and the town of Taybeh that took place on March 24. Another video shows Hezbollah fighters shelling Israeli troops in Khiam with a KS-19 100 mm and D-30 122 mm guns. The footage confirmed that the group is still in possession of artillery, and capable of fielding it.
A third video shows an attack on a Merkava Mk 4M main battle tank near the town of Biyyadah. The tank was targeted with an Almas anti-tank guided missile, made in Iran.
Ongoing Israeli ground operations have displaced more than 600,000 people to the north of the Litani River, located 20 to 30 kilometers away from the Blue Line separating Lebanon from Israel. The IDF is to occupy this whole region, and Defense Minister Israel Katz has openly stated that the people displaced won’t be allowed to return.
Israel’s ultimate goal is to disarm Hezbollah, but this remains highly unrealistic, even if all of southern Lebanon was occupied.
