The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced on June 2 that its fighter jets struck overnight a Hezbollah compound in northeastern Lebanese district of Baalbek
Baalbek, known to be a Hezbollah stronghold, is located around 100 kilometers from the Israeli border. The IDF didn’t provide any further details on the compound hit in the district. Meanwhile, Lebanese media reported that two people were wounded there.
In addition to the compound, the IDF said that its fighter jets also struck a building used by Hezbollah in the town of Bint Jbeil as well as command rooms in the towns of Qana and Baraachit. The three towns are located in southern Lebanon, the heartland of the group.
The IDF said that the strike came as a response to Hezbollah shooting down a combat drone over southern Lebanon on June 1.
Hezbollah’s Military Media released video footage showing the downing of the drone, which was identified as a Hermes 900.
Two other videos recently released by the group showed an attack with heavy rockets on the headquarters of the IDF’s 91st Division in the Pranit barracks and a missile strike against a Merkava MK4 main battle tank near the site of Zabdin along the Lebanese border.
Since the outbreak of the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip last October, Hezbollah and its allies began launching near-daily attacks against the IDF in support of the Hamas Movement and other armed factions in the Palestinian enclave.
The border clashes have so far resulted in ten civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the deaths of at least 14 IDF soldiers and reservists. On the Lebanese side, more than 400 people have been killed, including 308 fighters of Hezbollah and at least 80 civilians.
