The Houthis (Ansar Allah) launched another missile at Israel on March 20 afternoon, despite continuous United States strikes on their areas in Yemen.
In a statement, Houthi military spokesman, Brigadier General Yahya Saree, said that the group launched a Palestine-2 hypersonic ballistic missile at a military target to the south of the central Israeli city of Tel Aviv.
“In support of the Palestinian people and response to the massacres perpetrated by Israel in the Gaza Strip, our forces carried out a qualitative military operation targeting an Israeli military target south of Tel Aviv, using a hypersonic ballistic missile,” the spokesman said.
“This is the second operation within 24 hours,” he added, referring to the first ballistic missile attack that the group said was aimed at the Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, which Israel announced it intercepted.
Brig. Gen Saree also reiterated that the group would continue attacks on Israel and its ships until the war on Gaza ceases and crossings reopen to allow aid in.
The missile attack triggered sirens in Jerusalem and surrounding towns, West Bank settlements, the Dead Sea area, and parts of central Israel.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced later that the missile was successfully intercepted by air defenses and shot down before crossing Israel’s borders. There were no reports of injuries or damage in the attack.
Amid the attack, Yemen’s Houthi-affiliated Al Masirah television network reported a series of U.S. strikes on the western province of al-Hodeida, which houses a key port on the Red Sea, and the northern province of Sadaa, the heartland of the Houthis. No casualties were reported however.
It’s worth noting that this was the third missile attack by the Houthis against Israel since March 19, with no hits being reported.
Citing an Israeli official, the Ynet news site reported on March 20 that Washington had asked Israel not to respond to the Houthis’ previous missile attacks. According to the report, the U.S. told Israel to “let them deal with it.” The latest attack may however push Israel to respond directly.
The U.S. military began to launch strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen on March 15 on orders from President Donlad Trump, who said that the large-scale operation was a response to the group’s attacks on shipping.
So far, the strikes have claimed the lives of some 53, including commanders of the Houthis and civilians. However, the Houthis remain undeterred.
