A series of Israeli strikes hit the west-central Syrian governorate of Hama late on September 13, just a few hours after a similar attack on the neighboring Tartus governorate.
The strikes were launched from the direction of Lebanon at around 22:40 p.m local time, a Syrian military official said, adding that the attack resulted in material losses only.
The target of the attack was reportedly a facility of the Syrian Scientific Studies and Research Center (SSRC) located near Taqsees village in the southern countryside of Hama. The SSRC develops and produces military equipment, including precision-guided missiles and drones, for the Syrian military and its allies, with alleged support from Iran.
Just a few hours earlier, at around 17:22 p.m, a series of Israeli strikes hit an air defense base near the village of Dier Alhajar in the southern Tartus countryside. A Syrian military official acknowledged that two service members were killed and six others were wounded in the attack.
The attack on Tartus was apparently a suppression of enemy air defenses, or SEAD, mission, aimed at paving the way for Israeli fighter jets to strike their targets in Hama without needing to evade Syrian air defenses.
The last alleged Israeli sortie over Syria was carried out on August 28, when a series of strikes hit Aleppo International Airport, putting it out of service for two days.
Israel has carried out hundreds of aerial attacks against Syria over the past decade. However, it rarely acknowledges responsibility as the attacks are a part of a covert military campaign. The campaign, known as “the war between the wars,” is meant to prevent Iran from establishing a lasting presence in the country or smuggling advanced weapons to Hezbollah in neighboring Lebanon.
