The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced on November 8 that its air defenses intercepted a missile that was launched from Yemen at Israeli territories.
Prior to the announcement, warning sirens sounded in parts of the Dead Sea, Arava desert and Negev regions in southern Israel.
The IDF didn’t provide any details about the incident. Most previous missile attacks from Yemen were carried out by the Houthis (Ansar Allah) using ballistic missiles which were intercepted using the Arrow anti-missile system. The Houthis did use cruise missiles on a few occasions, scoring a hit at least once.
The Houthis have not commented on the reported missile attack. However, the group said that it would be issuing an important statement later in the day.
The missile attack came just a few hours after Yemeni media reported that an MQ-9 Reaper combat drone of the United States military was shot down by Houthi defenses over the northern province of al-Jawf.
Since November of last year, the Houthis, who are backed by Iran, have been launching attacks in response to the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip.
The group claims to have so far targeted more than 200 vessels owned by Israel or its allies in waters near Yemen, shot down 11 U.S. drones and launched dozens of attacks against Israeli territories using ballistic and cruise missiles as well as suicide drones.
The U.S. and the United Kingdom have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen since January. Israel also launched two waves of strikes against civilian infrastructure in al-Hodeidah in July and September. However, the group remains undeterred.
