The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) continues to take losses while operating around the Shifa Hospital in the northern Gaza Strip.
The brutal attack on the medical complex in Gaza City began on March 18, with claims by the IDF that hundreds of members from the Hamas Movement and other Palestinian armed factions, including senior commanders, were taking shelter there.
By March 24, the attack was still ongoing. The IDF announced that a Staff Sergeant from the Nahal Brigade’s 932nd Battalion was killed while taking part in the attack on the hospital. His death brought the toll of slain Israeli troops in the ground offensive in Gaza to 252.
The IDF said a day earlier, on March 23, that it had killed more than 170 fighters and captured 800 suspects during its ongoing attack on the Shifa Hospital.
On the very same day, at least five Palestinian patients died at the medical complex due to the absence of health services, food and water as a result of the siege imposed by the IDF, according to the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza.
“Five wounded people besieged by the occupation were hospitalized in the Shifa Medical Complex for the sixth day in a row without water, food, or health services,” the ministry said in a statement.
It added that the rest of the patients at the medical complex are in “a very bad condition and worms have begun to come out of their wounds.”
“The besieged medical teams and patients appeal to all UN institutions and the international community to intervene urgently to save their lives,” the ministry said.
While Hamas and other factions are not really present in the Shifa Hospital, they continue to engage Israeli troops operating around it.
On March 21, Hamas’ military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, released two videos showing its fighters targeting an IDF sniper and firing rocket-propelled grenades at several Israeli main battle tanks near the medical complex.
Recent Israeli operations in Gaza caused more casualties and led to a deterioration in the humanitarian crisis there. By March 23, the death toll in the Strip had reached 32,226 with more than 74,518, according to the health ministry.
