On September 6, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) dropped leaflets over Baiyt Irah in the western countryside of Syria’s Daraa, warning one of the town’s locals against cooperating with Lebanon’s Hezbollah.
In its leaflets, the IDF identified the alleged Hezbollah collaborator as Ahmad Ibrahim Qassim, also known as “Abu al-Laith.”
“We are aware of your continuous cooperation with Hezbollah in the region … Stop cooperating with Hezbollah immediately! For your sake and the sake of your country!” the leaflets, which also included a photo of Qassim, read.
Israel believes that Hezbollah is working to establish a network of cells in Syria’s southern region to launch attacks against its territory.
Last April, the IDF launched two waves of strikes with artillery and missiles against military posts in the countryside of al-Quneitra after several rockets were fired at the occupied Golan Heights from the western Dara countryside.
Another wave of Israeli strikes hit positions of Syrian security forces in al-Quneitra in July. Back then, Syria called the attack a violation of the 1974 separation of forces agreement but didn’t respond.
The IDF drops leaflets with threats to locals and service members in al-Quneitra and Daraa on a regular basis in what appears to be a part of an intimidation plan.
