On January 7, an Israeli Border Police officer was killed and three others wounded by a roadside bomb during a raid in the Jenin refugee camp in the northern part of the occupied West Bank.
In a joint statement, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and police said that their troops stormed Jenin for what was described as a “counterterrorism operation,” when an explosive device planted on the side of a road hit the Border Police vehicle.
The slain female police officer, 19-year-old Sergeant Shay Germay, was in the targeted vehicle, along with three of her comrades, who were moderately injured.
The IDF said that during the evacuation of the wounded police officers, an attack helicopter carried out a strike against a group of Palestinian gunmen who were hurling explosives at troops. Later, the Palestinian Authority health ministry announced that six people, including four brothers, were killed in the strike.
The Jenin Brigades, which is linked to the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, claimed responsibility and released video footage showing the attack.
In a separate incident, an Israeli man in his 30s was shot dead in what Israel’s Magen David Adom ambulance service described as “a suspected terror attack” on the Route 465 highway in the West Bank, close to the settlement of Ofra. Route 465 and the nearby Route 60 highway have been temporarily closed to traffic in both directions as Israeli forces try to locate the shooters, who have fled.

Violence in the West Bank has soared since the outbreak of the war in the Gaza Strip. The IDF and security forces intensified operations in the occupied territory.
So far, Israeli forces have arrested more than 2,600 Palestinians across the West Bank, including more than 1,300 affiliated with the Hamas Movement. According to the Palestinian Authority health ministry, some 300 Palestinians have been killed in that time.
