A reserve soldier was killed and several others were wounded in the Gaza Strip on August 23, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
The slain soldier held the rank of Sergeant First Class and was serving in the ranks of the 6310th Battalion of the IDF’s Jerusalem Brigade.
According to an initial IDF probe, the soldier entered a building in Gaza City’s Zeitoun neighborhood in the northern part of the Stip and began to search it. As four soldiers from the force entered the structure, an explosive device planted on the outer wall of the building exploded.
The blast affected only the troops standing outside the building, not those inside. At least four other soldiers were seriously wounded, and another three were moderately hurt.
The IDF probe assessed that fighters from the Hamas Movement had set up a camera at the building and then detonated the explosive upon identifying Israeli troops in the area. This was later confirmed by the group’s military wing, the al-Qassam Brigade, which claimed responsibility for the deadly attack.
The Jerusalem Brigade has been operating in Gaza City’s Zeitoun neighborhood for the last few days, to expand the so-called Netzarim Corridor.
The Israeli-occupied corridor splits Gaza into a northern zone and a southern zone, with a width of up to four kilometers. The IDF have been using the corridor to launch raids in the northern and central parts of the Strip as well as to restrict the movement of Palestinian civilians.
The latest death brought Israel’s toll in the ground operations against Hamas and other Palestinian armed factions in Gaza and along its border to 337. Around 2,200 others have been reportedly wounded. In addition, over 500 vehicles were hit in the Strip, according to Hebrew media.
Meanwhile on the Palestinian side, the death toll from the Israeli war is nearing 40,300, with women and children making up most of the casualties.
